OUR PHILOSOPHY

Playhouse values early childhood as an exciting and important time in a child’s life. Young children need to explore and experiment freely by themselves and with the world around them. At Playhouse, meaningful learning happens through hands-on experiences. Sensitivity and respect for differences are integral parts of our teaching.  Problem-solving and social skills are developed to foster independent thinking. Our staff provides guidance in a nurturing environment. Established in 1951 as a cooperative school, we are enriched by the contributions of our diverse group of families. For a comprehensive explanation of our philosophy, see the Playhouse Pillars.

OUR CURRICULUM

The Playhouse day includes structured activities and free play for individuals and groups of children. Children learn by doing, and are given an array of open-ended materials so they can explore. Children may dress up, build with blocks, or experiment with sand and water. They may work with paints, clay, collage and wood-working materials. Music and movement are offered to nourish the senses, while puzzles and games are used to encourage problem-solving. An extensive school library supplies children with books to develop their love of story and understanding of language. Daily outdoor play provides opportunities for physical activity and appreciation for our natural environment. Classrooms are homes to small animals, providing children with everyday contact with nature.
